Gideon's Picks

An amazingly cute self help-ish book for all the goblins out there. From how to cozy up your wardrobe to embracing the muck of self care, Coyle addresses it all with style, humor, and compassion.

This is a hard subject to broach, but Martin does it well. Offering insight and resources, as well as his personal experience, suicide and it's associated taboos are addressed with a tender understanding. The philosophy and science behind it all is explored in a nonjudgmental tone. For those struggling or those who know someone struggling, this is a good book. Be warned, it is a raw and emotional read. At least, it definitely was for me.
This is my book of the year HANDS DOWN! It has reinvention, found family/community, queer romance, and coffee shop au fan fic vibes! Words cannot adequately describe how much I love this book. Originally released by a smaller publisher in February, it's safe to say I've read and reread this book several times now. Travis Baldree has written a novel that fantasy lovers have desperately needed. This book is a warm hug for your soul. 1000/10 recommended.
Ok, hear me out. This book's art is cute and it's surprisingly informative! Even for grown ups who think they know everything (like me)! Kids young and old would appreciate this quirky science book. Trust me.
An interactive adventure for the TTRPG fan. Kruger is very aware of the typical D&D mechanics and makes it fun to apply them to the "real world". By the end of this nerdy self help book, you'll have a stat driven character sheet and better understanding of yourself and how you work.

A book that, in a witty and enjoyable way, shows us humans how we ain't shit! 11 outta 10
If you're like me, housekeeping might not be your forte. It can make ya feel guilty when everything isn't sparkling clean always, but really that's an unrealistic goal. KC helps break the harmful perfection mentality and throws you a line, pulling you out of turbulent waters and towers of dirty dishes.
With a bread recipe I actually manage to not screw up, this is my favorite cookbook. Weissman's wit is as sharp as his knives, with the instructions spelling it out in a clear, direct tone. Starting with the small things (ie pickling and sauces) this book is a masterclass that'll help any chef learn a thing or two. Highly recommend this for new and seasoned adventurers in the kitchen.
A sweet high school coming of age, coming out, and coming together story. Highly recommend a tissue box, because you'll be tearing up with this one. In a good way! I promise!
Three buddy vampires work together to break a curse, meeting a creepy cool cast of characters along the way. It's a goofy adventure with fantastic art that will leave you smiling.

I never really thought that pop culture had a huge influence on how I viewed my sexuality back in the 2000s, the height of my hormonal youth. Perry's own experiences as well as their whip smart analyses really blew away any pretense I had of living in an unaffected bubble. No one person exists in a vacuum and, unless you have literally lived away from all the touches of society, pop culture has in fact influenced you. If you are like me, then this collection of snarky and poignant essays will hit close to home in the best of ways.

I first stumbled across Anderson on twitter where his blue bird blurbs shifted my perspective on the world. So, it was with zero hesitation that I picked up this book of poetry, which had the exact same effect. His vivid descriptions of nature are both comforting and mind-blowing. With a real knack for making one feel small in the universe, he simultaneously inflates our own importance amongst the stars. We're all weird jellyfish piloting meat suits on a mote of dust in the universe, and that's just fine. I'd like to think Anderson would agree.
Do you need to wow your friends at the next game night? Look no further than Heroes' Feast! Delve into dungeons and dragons themed desserts, entrees, and drinks in this tasty tome. If you're a huge nerd like me, you'll appreciate the lore and flavor text that comes along with each recipe. So roll for initiative as you head to the kitchen for this next culinary adventure!
I used to knit scarves like mad, but there are only so many warm winter wraps you can make before your family and friends tell you to stop. So, I gave up on that hobby and jumped to a new ones. Years later and I'm back making bubblegum pink socks! If you have no idea where to begin and the terminology is foreign to you, this is a good place to start. It's certainly been a help to this knitter!

More than just my namesake, this novel will take you into a creepy world of necromancers and monsters. Did I mention it's in space and there are sword fighting lesbians? The start to a stellar series, GtN will be worth the hurt you feel as you get invested in the somewhat tragic story of its characters and then jarred with its dark humor. Pay attention to Muir, because The Locked Tomb series is worth your time to the tenth power!

The first book in a series about the animal uprising, Mort(e) does not hold back. It's dark but funny in a "hey what if animals grew people hands and starting taking over" kind of way. I don't think I'm doing this book justice, but trust me! It's quick wit and complex characters will draw you in until you're not quite sure who you're rooting for in this War with No Name.
It's no secret amongst my friends, colleagues, and even complete strangers that I'm a dungeons and dragons fanatic. I've been playing in two weekly games for at least three years now and it's safe to say I'm thoroughly hooked. Even so, a regular like me could always use some pointers on player tactics. Enter Ammann with this gem of a tome. From druids to warlocks and everything in between, LTT spells out each class's best bets in battle. It even goes the extra mile to include some hypothetical scenarios for your reading pleasure. From newbies to veterans, this book is a handy manual on how not to die when it's time to roll dice.

For some of you, this whole pandemonium may have given you a lot of time to think and reflect on yourselves. At least, that's what happened to me and that introspection led me to this book. With it's cute and comforting art style, the often times difficult subject of gender identity is broached with absolute clarity. A suitable read for all ages of questioning persons, G and Zuckerberg's guide really does make identity exploration quick and easy. The daunting question of "who am I?" has never seemed so approachable.

This book is what initially got me into reading fantasy novels. What Effie Calvin's work did for me, I hope can be done for you too when reading this start to a spectacular series. "The Queen of Ieflaria" gave me the diverse representation that I wanted in a fantasy novel with it's slow burn queer romance and capable heroines. It's charm is beyond measure and I had a hard time putting the book down. After education system assigned reading burnout, this book reignited a spark in me and reminded me that I actually DO enjoy reading for fun. Let Calvin's work into your life to give it a little magic. We all could use some.
Follow along with a lowly worker bee as she discovers her place in the hive, as well as some dark secrets no bee was ever meant to learn. Paull paints a picture of the insect microcosm in a way that will compel you to read page after page, diving deeper into the trials and tribulations of these teeny creatures.
I was raised on zombie movies and books by my horror movie fanatic father. Though there was a time where I was getting bored with the typical zombie narrative, in came MR Carey with this refreshing story of a young girl full of questions and somewhat afraid of what the answers might be. This book is one gut punch after another. Despite this abuse, I found it difficult to put down! Carey creates a rich world of a potential apocalypse that, depending what you know about fungi, may not be so far off from reality.
The harrowing tale of a father and son in the aftermath of an apocalypse. Times are tough, but these two tragic characters persevere. I won't lie, this book is a serious gut punch. If you're looking for something to make you feel good, this is NOT the book for you. However, I highly recommend this read if you (like me) love a good dystopian story with a flicker of hope for humanity hidden within.
