First in a series by a Madison author, I've heard good things--definitely in the The Expanse niche of semi-military space opera. The sequel, Exiled Fleet, just came out too.

I just love this series so muuuuuuch. Another political space opera whodunit with interesting tech and great characters. It won the Hugo a couple years ago.

This is an older/ongoing series but I really like it and I think if your dad hasn't tried it he might too. It's set in London and it's about a mixed race young beat cop who gets caught up in magical underworlds. It's a very mystery crossover with just very winning characters. The audiobooks are brilliant.

This is a series whose final book just got published. Pat Rothfuss loves this series, and I've seen other middle aged dudes talk about how relatable the main character is. Another kind of noir fantasy detective style one. I haven't read these. The warehouse that our website is connected to is out at the moment so DM me if you want this one and I'll see how long it'd take to get from the publisher.
This is a chonky tome, high fantasy in the vein of Eddings but less... well let's just say don't google "Eddings child abuse". This one has more women and gays in it but otherwise hits a lot of the high fantasy notes. Ditto what I said above about the warehouse being out of stock.
I don't know much about this one but it's space opera and this author seems to be pretty popular among the SF crowd.
Lots of people who love Kingkiller also love Sanderson, especially this series. This is the first book, this is the trade paperback edition--there's also a mass market edition which is cheaper but I think these books are so chonky as to make that format unwieldy, personally--however, if you want to order the mass market, here's the link: https://www.roomofonesown.com/book/9780765365279
A robots and space thriller! Definitely creepy and claustrophobic in parts, also a bit political in terms of AI rights by the end. Gripping read. Also a little gay.
I love this series and I feel like nobody ever heard of it. There are 3 books and they're all out now. The author has a newer series that's more high fantasy that I'll link below. This is the first in this trilogy and it's a bit of a political spy mystery where the old gods who were killed by and occupying force may not be as dead as we think. Very thoughtful.
The newer series by RJB! I haven't read this but my partner liked it. Good magic system.

A bit of a less rapey and terrible game of thrones situation--multiple protagonists with varying perspectives on an oppressive empire. The magic system is very cool and a little gruesome. Good characters and the worldbuilding is great.
