Local Organizations We Support

Room loves to give back to local community organizations throughout the year. The list of orgs we donate to is too long to post, but here are a few organizations we have ongoing relationships with, and collect donations for on a rolling basis!

LGBT Books to Prisoners (https://lgbtbookstoprisoners.org/) is a donation-funded, volunteer-run organization based in Madison, WI that sends books and other educational materials, free of charge, to incarcerated LGBTQ people across the United States. They have been doing this for over 10 years and have sent books to over 8,000 people in that time. See their website to donate via Paypal, or order a book from Room for them through their wishlist! Please contact the organization directly concerning used book donations.

Wisconsin Books to Prisoners (https://wisconsinbookstoprisoners.org) is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a love of reading behind bars, encourage the pursuit of knowledge and self-empowerment, and break the cycle of recidivism. WBTP welcomes financial and book donations (they share a library and work space with the LGBT Books to Prisoners, above). You can order a book for the org from their wishlist on our site, or contact the organization directly concerning used book donations.

The Madison Reading Project (https://www.madisonreadingproject.com/what-we-do) is dedicated to collecting and selecting books that are exciting, engaging, and diverse for age levels from birth to teenagers. They distribute books at schools, community centers, homeless shelters, and many other locations where children and families visit. A child has more potential to improve skills and enthusiasm for reading when books are accessible in multiple places in a community. Room collects donations of childrens' books for them throughout the year. See their website for ideas on what they need.

Arts + Literature Lab's Queer Youth Book Club ALL is starting a youth book club program, and they have a wishlist through our site collecting donations for their youth library!

Goodman Community Center's Transition Academy (https://www.goodmancenter.org/programs/lussier-loft-high-school-programs"is an alternative high school experience, in partnership with Madison Metropolitan School District, that engages teens in hands-on learning at the Goodman Community Center".  Donations can be made via their wishlist!
