Wisconsin Book Festival October 16-19

Event date:
Thursday, October 16, 2014 - 11:48am

A Room of One's Own is honored once again to participate in the Wisconsin Book Festival! You will find many talented authors in our store and around downtown! Don't forget to say hello to us at the Bookseller's Lounge at the Madison Central Library!

In addition to the many wonderful offsite events, we are delighted to host a number of events in our store! We are thrilled to welcome the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Art, and Letters's contest winners on Friday night at 5:30pm. Poet Lauren Alleyne joins us to share her poems of self-discovery Difficult Fruit on Saturday morning at 11am. Madisonian Bridget Birdsall celebrates the release of her brand new young adult novel Double Exposure, following the life of intersex kid Alyx Atlas as she moves house with her mother and starts her life over, this time reflecting her true identity as a girl. Novelist Rachel Pastan takes us to the flip side of du Maurier's Rebecca in her lyrical murder mystery Alena on Saturday evening at 5:30pm.

From Wisconsin Book Festival Director Conor Moran:

Earlier this year, we told you to mark your calendars for October 16th-19th.  Now you can start filling them in with all of the wonderful events you want to attend.  The lineup for our fall celebration is complete.  We are incredibly excited about the more than 60 events we will host over another excellent four days.

This year, we will continue to offer great events, featuring local literary talents alongside national voices.  From Thursday through Sunday, you can see a wide range of authors across multiple genres.  You can attend event with established authors like mystery writer Deborah Crombie, Wisconsin's own Michael Perry, or journalist and memoirist, Gail Sheehy, whose book Passages was a national bestseller and was named one of the 10 most influential books of the 20th century.  Or seek out some of the emerging voices at this year's festival by attending the Wisconsin People & Ideas Writing Contest Reading, June Melby's reading from her touching Wisconsin memoir, My Family and Other Hazards, or the How to Sell Your Novel panel.  Looking for great fiction?  You'll want to save the day on Saturday when we have novelists and short story writers reading from 10:30 AM until 8:30 PM. Interested in poetry, performance, or photography?  We have wonderful events lined up every day throughout the festival!

We are delighted to be co-hosting many events alongside the Wisconsin Science Festival this year.  Our concurrent festivals will offer some outstanding science programming at Central Library and the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery.  Former US Chief Technology Officer, Aneesh Chopra, will show us how the government can create a more Innovative State. UW Professor, Jordan Ellenberg, will teach us How Not to Be Wrong.  Terese Allen, Ron Faiola, and many other Wisconsin authors & scientists will serve up the Science of the Supper Club.
