A Room of One's Own is thrilled to welcome Caldecott and Newbery-winning author Kevin Henkes for a reading and book signing from his latest lovable story for beginning readers!

Penny and Her Doll is the second book in the beginning reader series from one of the most beloved picture book creators in the field today. With an engaging text and the artist’s signature bright candy colors, Penny and Her Doll is an exciting new addition to the Kevin Henkes canon.

When Penny gets a gift in the mail from Gram, she loves her new doll instantly. Her doll has pink cheeks and a pink bow and a pink dress with big buttons. But she doesn’t have a name. Penny thinks. She thinks very hard. Mama and Papa say the perfect name will come to her . . . and they are right!

Beginning readers will relate to Penny’s sweet and curious disposition. Her short-lived worry over naming her doll is a gentle reminder of the importance of patience and the unconditional support of family.

Penny and Her Doll follows Penny and Her Song, which received three starred reviews. Penny joins Lilly, Wemberly, Chrysanthemum, Chester, and Owen in Kevin Henkes’s family of beloved mouse characters.

Kevin Henkes is the creator of many books for children, including both picture books and novels. He and his wife, Laura Dronzek, live with their son and daughter in Madison, Wisconsin.  Author photo by Michelle Corpora.
