Event date:

Dale Kushner launches her novel The Conditions of Love at A Room of One's Own! Come enjoy refreshments and have a chance to hear the author read, answer questions, and sign copies of her new book!

In 1953, ten-year-old Eunice lives in the rural backwaters of Wisconsin with her outrageously narcissistic mother, a manicureeste and movie star worshipper. Abandoned by her father as an infant, Eunice worries that she will share her mother’s fate and become a misfit. When the devoted Sam moves in, Eunice imagines her life will finally become normal.

Through her eyes we see the dissolution of hope when Sam gets kicked out, and she is again alone with her mother. A freak storm precipitates Eunice’s journey away from all things familiar. Rescued by the shaman-like Rose, Eunice’s odyssey continues with a stay in a hermit’s shack and ends with a passionate love affair with an older man. Through her capacity to reject bitterness and revenge and keep her heart open, Eunice saves herself from a doomed life, survives and flourishes.  In each of the three sections Eunice is tested by destructive forces. Her innocence is lost and regained through her ability to confront and absorb change and an innate capacity for joy.

The Conditions of Love explores how destiny is wrestled from fate, how place and culture affect who we are, and how the bonds of friendship and love create a home for us in the world.
