Callen Harty, author of My Queer Life

Event date:
Sunday, March 16, 2014 - 2:00pm

A Room of One's Own is delighted to welcome Callen Harty, local author of the recently published book My Queer Life. It’s a greatest hits collection of queer writing from one of Wisconsin’s most prolific writers.

Harty is the author of more than a thousand poems, dozens of published articles and essays, two dozen produced plays and 50 monologues, 150 blog posts, and more. The book includes the best of that work on the topic of living an authentic queer life in America. It moves through his first tentative steps at coming out to speaking before a thousand people at a gay rights rally to his reflections on same-sex marriage and other important topics of the day.

Harty is well-known in the Madison area as a playwright, particularly at Broom Street Theater where 23 of his plays have been produced. His monologues for the Wisconsin Veterans’ Museum cemetery tour, Talking Spirits, won awards from the Wisconsin Historical Society and the American Association of State and Local History. Harty’s work has been published in Out!, Our Lives, the James White Review, Quest, Wisconsin Gazette, and elsewhere. He also maintains the blog A Single Bluebird.
