Event date:

A Room of One's Own is proud to welcome popular science fiction author Alex Bledsoe for a reading and booksigning from Wisp of A Thing the highly-anticipated follow-up to The Hum and the Shiver! Bledsoe's reading will be accompanied by live fiddle tunes from Amy McNally, playing songs that relate to the book!

Alex Bledsoe astonished readers with The Hum and the Shiver (Tor, 2011)—a remarkable fantasy that was named one of the Best Fiction Books of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews. Drawing inspiration from Appalachian folklore and the haunting music of the region, Bledsoe spun the fascinating original mythology of the Tufa—an enigmatic clan of mountain folk whose historical roots are lost in myth and controversy. Now Bledsoe returns to the dark valleys and hollows of the Smoky Mountains in WISP OF A THING, a moving standalone tale of music and magic older than the hills.

After tragedy strikes, Rob Quillen comes to Cloud County in search of a song that might ease his aching heart. He finds both music and mystery in the mountains. Close-lipped locals guard their secrets, even as Rob gets caught up in a subtle power struggle he can’t begin to comprehend. A vacationing wife goes missing, raising suspicions of foul play, and a strange feral girl runs wild in the woods, howling in the night like a lost spirit. Change is coming to Cloud County, and only the night wind knows what part Rob will play when the last leaf falls from the Widow’s Tree…and a timeless curse is broken at last.

ALEX BLEDSOE is the author of The Hum and the Shiver, as well as the novels in the Eddie LaCrosse series: The Sword-Edged Blonde, Burn Me Deadly, and Dark Jenny. He lives near Madison, WI.
