A Room of One's Own happily welcomes two fantastic local authors of literary fiction for a joint reading and book-signing! Join us to hear Abby Frucht read from her new book A Well-Made Bed(written in collaboration with Laurie Alberts), and Dale Kushner, author of the beloved novel The Conditions of Love, will read from her forthcoming novel The Lie of Forgetting.

About Abby Frucht: Abby Frucht, a judge for this year’s Pen Faulkner Awards in Fiction, is a prize-winning novelist and essayist who lives on a lake in Wisconsin, has raised two sons, worked as mentor and advisor for twenty years at Vermont College of Fine Arts, and counts her many friendships among women as one of the driving inspirations of her life.

About A Well-Made Bed: Written by two women (Abby Frucht and Laurie Alberts) who live a thousand miles apart, A WELL-MADE BED features the exploits and tricky friendship of Jaycee and Noor—the Thelma and Louise of the 21st century. Nearly fifteen years after the death of her childhood friend in a violent hit-and-run accident, Noor Khan is still in the midst of struggle. With a failing equestrian business and suspicions of an unfaithful husband, her years of physical and psychological therapies have driven her to cross a line that blurs what is law, and what is right. When Noor’s home-steading neighbor, Jaycee, gives her the chance to save her business and her marriage through the underground cocaine market, the two fall into a world of murder, copyright infringement, dementia, and one large wheel of Peruvian cheese that has them trapped in the morally ambiguous lives they may have desired all along.

About Dale M. Kushner: Dale M. Kushner teaches workshops that combine her interest in Buddhism, Jungian psychology, and the creative process. She has taught for the Assisi Institute and is the former Poetry Editor for The Journal of Pastoral Care & Counseling. Currently, she writes a blog for Psychology Today. Ms. Kushner’s most recent poetry collection More Alive Than Lions Roaring was a finalist for the May Swenson Poetry Award at Utah State Press and the Agha Shahid Ali Prize at University of Utah. The Conditions of Love is her debut novel. She is currently working on her second novel that explores transgenerational trauma.

Dale will be reading from her forthcoming novel The Lie of Forgetting, which is not yet available for preorder or purchase--we will be getting a taste of the book early!

About The Conditions of Love: This book traces the journey of a girl from childhood to adulthood as she reckons with her parents’ abandonment, her need to break from society’s limitations, and her overwhelming desire for spiritual and erotic love. In 1953, ten-year-old Eunice lives in the backwaters of Wisconsin with her outrageously narcissistic mother, a manicureeste and movie star worshipper. Abandoned by her father as an infant, Eunice worries that she will become a misfit like her mother. Rescued from a freak storm by the shaman-like Rose, Eunice’s odyssey continues with a stay in a hermit’s shack and ends with a passionate love affair with an older man. At once fable and realistic story, The Conditions of Love is a book about emotional and physical survival.
