WisCon: The World's Leading Feminist Science Fiction Convention!

WisCon is the world's leading feminist science fiction convention, held every year over Memorial Day weekend. WisCon
encourages discussion and debate of ideas relating to feminism,
gender, race and class. WisCon welcomes writers, editors and artists
whose work explores these themes as well as their many fans. We have
panel discussions, academic presentations, and readings as well as many
other uncategorizable events. WisCon is primarily a book-oriented
convention... with an irrepressible sense of humor.

Plain Kate by Erin Bow

So much about this book is refreshing, intriguing, very real-life fairytale.

It's based on Russian fairy tales, and I was so absorbed
that I started blurring reality and the book. The darkness and damp, the hardship, the anguish, everything Kate feels
and experiences is palpable and believable. Be aware: it gets REALLY dark, but the beauty within is worth every tear.

Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

I love pretty much everything Okorafor publishes, but I think she's really hitting her stride on young adult/middle reader stories with this, her third novel for the YA crowd. The protagonist and her close circle of friends come from numerious identities and their bond as initiates in a secret culture of magic users is believable and intriguing.
