Course Materials: Information for Students

A Room of One's Own carries a range of new and used course materials for a variety of classes from UW-Madison and Madison College! Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions.

When should I stop in to buy my books?

The best time to come in is the week before classes begin. By then, we usually have had time to get most course orders from your professors, order the books (including used copies), and have then checked in and ready to go on the textbook shelves.

We carry a range of new and used course materials for a variety of classes from UW-Madison and Madison College!

Come In this Weekend!: We recommend coming in on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday (January 17-20th) for the best chance at getting used books. Most titles, used and new, will be here by Friday Jan 17th. We will continue to carry course materials for the first 6 weeks of the semester, so make sure to stop in sooner rather than later!

Save Money!: Please note that used textbooks are not available to order online, but we DO have used copies of many titles in stock--we strongly recommend coming into the store to see if used copies of your textbooks are available BEFORE you order online! We also offer rentals on select textbooks in an effort to make this semester a little more affordable for you.

Sell Your Old Textbooks!: We are still buying back your course books from previous semesters--the last day to sell old course books is MONDAY, JANUARY 20th, so make sure to come by before that time for a chance to get cash back on your old textbooks.

We are open from 10am-8pm Mon-Fri and 12-5 on Sunday. If you have any questions about coursebooks, please call us at 608-257-7888. We are not able to hold course materials--out of fairness, used and new textbooks are only available on a first come, first-served basis.

Instructors!: If you are an instructor looking to have us carry course books for your class, it isn't too late! Please get in touch with us by email (room@chorus.net) or phone (608-257-7888).

Room's Grand Opening Events and Prize Drawing!

In celebration of the grand opening of our new space, we're hosting two weeks of fantastic events featuring award-winning, world renowned authors, including Michael Perry, Chris Cleave, and Kevin Henkes, as well as up-and-coming new talent like David Pratt, Mark Zubro, and Antoine Wilson. We are thrilled to welcome them in our store and hope to see many of you here, enjoying the bigger and better event space!

As a thank you to everyone who has supported us during this transition, we will be holding a Prize drawing for a gift certificate to the store! There is no purchase necessary to enter, but we do request a limit of one entry per person. There will be a box at the front counter from October 2nd through October 12th, and one lucky winner will get a $100 certificate to the store!

About Us

A Room of One's Own Bookstore has been a fixture in downtown Madison, Wisconsin since 1975.

Our New Location: In late July 2012, Room moved to 315 W. Gorham St., joining forces with our friends at Avol's Bookstore, just down the street from Community Pharmacy. We are now pleased to offer new and used books, in twice the space we had at our Johnson St. location! We encourage you to bring your gently-used books in to sell.

Avol's Used Books: Avol's continues to maintain a used book buyback counter in our space. The hours for used book buying are: Noon to 6pm, Mon-Sat. We are always interested in buying good, clean used books. We generally do not buy books with underlining, highlighting, water damage or severe wear. We do not buy Romance novels, Westerns, Reader's Digest books, magazines or journals. If you have any questions or would like to talk to the used book buyer, please call 608-255-4730 and ask for Ron. You can also find Avol's on the web at www.avolsbooks.com.

Front of new store

A Room of One's Own is an independent, local bookstore: Room offers a wide selection of current and classic fiction, nonfiction, periodicals, graphic novels, local interest titles, gifts, greeting cards, and t-shirts. We also have strong children's and young adult, women's studies and LGBT fiction and nonfiction sections.

Room's feminist community: We are proud to be a central part of Madison's women's community, and our roots in Madison's feminist community go deep. Our store has given us the opportunity to provide a meeting place, event forum, and safe space. We are happy to host community events. If your small book or discussion group would like to use our community room to meet, please call ahead to check availability at 608-257-7888.

Web Orders and e-books: We are happy to be able to offer e-books and web orders for in-store pickup or mail delivery through our website! Please note that our website does not reflect our in-store stock: please call us at (608) 257-7888 to find out if we have the title (new or used) that you would like.

WE HAVE MOVED!

We are now happily installed in our new location at 315 W. Gorham St, with our friends from Avol's Bookstore!

Thank you so much to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped us make the move--you were so dedicated and efficient that we were moved much more quickly than we had anticipated! We so appreciated your hard work and good cheer in helping us move.

Here is the view from the front of the store (featuring staffmember Amy behind the desk and volunteers Melissa and Ingrid browsing books!) Front of new store, bright yellow walls and lighting, overlooking the front desk and fiction area.

We spent Monday trying to get settled, doing some rearranging and getting displays set up.  We opened Tuesday, July 24th  at 10 and so far we think the response has been wonderful. We are certainly proud of all the work that has gone into this move. We are still a work in progress, but we think you'll be amazed at how beautiful the store looks!

If you have any questions for us, you can still reach us at (608) 257-7888 and room@chorus.net!

A Room of One's Own Bookstore is pleased to announce that we will serve as a distribution point for World Book Night!

Read more about the process at the WBN website, www.worldbooknight.org

This event is free for anyone who wants to participate! All you have to do is sign up (here is the registration link), choose from the list of 30 great books, and describe what institution, charity, or underprivileged group you plan to donate 20 free copies of that book, and why! Then, in mid-April, stop by Room to pick up the 20 copies you plan to donate, and take them to be given out to their new owners.

The registration process for those wishing to become volunteer book givers is open through February 1, 2012.
