John Porcellino, author of The Hospital Suite

A Room of One's Own is delighted to continue our tradition of supporting talented graphic novelists! Beloit-based John Porcellino joins us to discuss his striking new book The Hospital Suite, from Drawn & Quarterly.

JOHN PORCELLINO was born in Chicago, in 1968, and has been writing, drawing, and publishing minicomics, comics, and graphic novels for over thirty years. His celebrated self-published series King-Cat Comics, begun in 1989, has inspired a generation of cartoonists. Diary of a Mosquito Abatement Man, a collection of King-Cat stories about Porcellino’s experiences as a pest control worker, won an Ignatz Award in 2005, and Perfect Example, first published in 2000, chronicles his struggles with depression as a teenager. According to cartoonist Chris Ware, “John Porcellino’s comics distill, in just a few lines and words, the feeling of simply being alive.” He currently lives in Beloit, Wisconsin.

A Room of One's Own is delighted to welcome Joel Christian Gill to read at our store!
Strange Fruit, Volume I is a collection of stories from African American history that exemplifies success in the face of great adversity. This unique graphic anthology offers historical and cultural commentary on nine uncelebrated heroes whose stories are not often found in history books. Among the stories included are: Henry "Box" Brown, who escaped from slavery by mailing himself to Philadelphia; Alexander Crummel and the Noyes Academy, the first integrated school in America, established in the 1830s; Marshall "Major" Taylor, a.k.a. the Black Cyclone, the first black champion in any sport; and Bass Reeves, the most successful lawman in the Old West. Written and illustrated by Joel Christian Gill, the diverse art beautifully captures the spirit of each remarkable individual and opens a window into an important part of American history.
Joel Christian Gill is the chairman, CEO, president, director of development, majority and minority stock holder, manager, co-manager, regional manager, assistant to the regional manager, receptionist, senior black correspondent, and janitor of Strange Fruit Comics. Paul Buhle, author of The Bohemians

Bohemians, the new comic art book edited by Paul Buhle, makes its first appearance at Room of One's Own, where long-standing local artists and musicians join Mayor Paul Soglin and editor Buhle to ask the question "what does Bohemianism mean in history, and what has it meant in Madison?"

About the book: The nineteenth-century countercultures that came to define the bohemian lifestyle spanned both sides of the Atlantic, ranging from Walt Whitman to Josephine Baker, and from Gertrude Stein to Thelonius Monk. Bohemians is the graphic history of this movement and its illustrious figures, recovering the utopian ideas behind millennial communities, and covering the rise of Greenwich Village, the multiracial and radical jazz world, and West Coast and Midwest bohemians, among other scenes.

Drawn by an all-star cast of comics artists, including rising figures like Sabrina Jones, Lance Tooks, and Summer McClinton, alongside established artists like Peter Kuper and Spain Rodriguez, Bohemians is a broad and entertaining account of the rebel impulse in American cultural history.

About the author: Paul Buhle retired from Brown University and Providence, Rhode Island in 2009, to Madison, Wisconsin and full-time work editing comics. His many books include the Verso volumes Marxism in the United States (third edition, 2013), Wobblies!, and the authorized biography of C.L.R. James, The Artist as Revolutionary.

WI Book Festival

A Room of One's Own is once again pleased to be a part of the Wisconsin Book Festival! You will find amazing Wisconsin authors reading and signing books all over town, including here at Room and at the beautiful new Downtown Central Library!

Revival by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton

A surprising, very human (and gruesome) story set in Wausau in a town
quarantined because the dead came back to life one day. GREAT ensemble
cast and strong writing that deals deftly with the reality of rural WI
life, racism, sexism and family issues. Unsettling horror meets small
town drama. Beautiful art and solid writing make this another favorite
from Image.

Saga Vol. 2 by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Saga is hands-down my favorite currently running comic. Vaughan's writing is sharp, Staples's art is evocative, and the story--of a young mixed family trying to escape a centuries-old intergalactic blood feud--will appeal to sci fi fans and parents alike.

Captain Marvel vol. 1 by Kelly Sue Deconnick

I have never been a big reader of Marvel titles, but enough friends told me to give this one a shot and. Yes. It's bright and brilliant and heartfelt, and Deconnick's writing is just getting better and better.

Spit & Passion by Cristy C. Road

The memoir is mostly centered around the author's middle school years, growing up in a Cubana household of working class women and children in Miami Beach, coming to terms with the fact of her queerness within a loving family embedded in a deeply religious culture inimicable to homosexuality.
