How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran

Instructive without being preachy, matter-of-factly but still warm, this book is possibly the funniest I have read all year by one of the UK's premier columnists. Not only does Moran make you laugh, she also gives a refreshing update to the discussion of what it means to be a woman and feminist today (it's much easier than you think).

Discount Armageddon

If you like Buffy: The Vampire Slayer or Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels, I have a new series for you. It's called InCryptid, and so far the series is about Verity Price, full-time cryptozoologist, part-time ballroom dancer, part-time waitress.

Insignia by S. J. Kincaid

Cyberpunk is back. It's here in YA literature, in a book called Insignia, and overused as this phrase is, I couldn't put it down.
Tom gets dragged through his young life by his gambler dad, learning to deal with his disappointed teachers and his father's occasional paranoid rants by hustling video games and rolling his eyes at the pro-American propaganda he gets at school. World War III is going on, and he hears a lot about kids like Elliot Ramirez, a computer pilot for the off-planet battles that are going on, a "safer" way to fight with other countries.

John Saturnall's Feast

Our store was fortunate enough to get a copy of John Saturnall's Feast, and I devoured it. I savored the setting, England in the mid-1600s. I didn't expect to, not usually being a fan of historical fiction. But this book was different. The hero, John, is a stubborn underdog with a gifted palate.

Home by Toni Morrison

This is a very powerful little book. If you can, try to devote some time to reading it in one sitting, because it takes hold of you and speaks a true message clearly. It's a message about being who you are, in spite of or because of the struggles that move you, and a message about grief, and how it can be a stagnating hiding place, or a transformative acknowledgment of pain.
