Captain Marvel vol. 1 by Kelly Sue Deconnick

I have never been a big reader of Marvel titles, but enough friends told me to give this one a shot and. Yes. It's bright and brilliant and heartfelt, and Deconnick's writing is just getting better and better.

Pantomime by Laura Lam

Highly recommended if you like alternate world fantasies and YA novels that deal with LGBTQI bodies and identities. Micah is a winning character and the worldbuilding has me raring for the sequel.

The Boy Detective Fails by Joe Meno

This great book is equal parts melancholy and humor, as ex-boy detective Billy Argo adjusts to life in the larger world. Meeting a cast of memorable characters, young and old alike, Billy attempts to make sense of his own modern mysteries such as falling in love with a mysterious woman on the bus, and the death of his sister Caroline 10 years ago. (Sound strange?

A mischievous kid's book as much for adults as for children (especially the ending!) Wonderfully illustrated, and serves as a great teaching fable for a younger audience.

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

Touching, real, surprising, beautiful. By the end of this book I felt like I really KNEW these characters, and even months later their personalities and hardships and small moments of discovery, awkwardness, and growth have stuck with me.

Spit & Passion by Cristy C. Road

The memoir is mostly centered around the author's middle school years, growing up in a Cubana household of working class women and children in Miami Beach, coming to terms with the fact of her queerness within a loving family embedded in a deeply religious culture inimicable to homosexuality.

A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan

A fun, light story with a strong woman at the center, this novel is highly enjoyable and will appeal to fans of Naomi Novik. Set in an alternate history in which dragons exist, a young woman becomes a self-taught naturalist in order to study them, and becomes one of the greatest scientific minds of her society.

The Dude and the Zen Master

For lovers of The Big Lebowski this is a great little book that applies concepts and sayings from the movie and applies them to real life situations. This isn't a zen guide, it's more like eavesdropping on two guys you totally wish you could have over for coffee. The book reads as an ongoing dialog between Jeff Bridges and Bernie Glassman. It is funny and insightful.

Letters of a Woman Homesteader by Elinore Pruitt Stewart

I loved this quick read about a determined woman and her homesteading adventures. Elinore is captured as adventurous but serious in letters to her friends. It paints a picture of how strong, funny, and smart the women of the American frontier had to be to survive.
