The Tenth of December by George Saunders

The literary equivalent of a series of violent muggings. Most of these
have a gut-punch moment... and you think that's it. Then you get to the
end and you realize that Saunders was stealing your wallet the whole
time.

The Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers

What a perfect war-novel! It was real without overdramatization, sentimental without nostalgia, violent without idealization, and richly sincere. The novel was clearly written by a poet/veteran as it felt like a Terrence Malick film throughout. My favorite for the next Pulitzer!

Suddenly, A Knock on the Door by Etgar Keret

By turns strange, funny, realistic, magical, dreamy, gritty, and oh so short. Keret is the Israeli Lydia Davis.... I would start here, then move on to the Nimrod Flipout.

The Killing Moon by N. K. Jemisin

Jemisin's worldbuilding is careful and fascinating, and the plot twists kept me turning the pages. The tension between morality and religion, between blind obedience and waiting to discover the truth, even when it is challenging, is central to this story. Great book, and now I'm raring for the sequel!

Welcome to Your Awesome Robot by Viviane Schwarz

I absolutely can't wait for my goddaughter to be a couple of years older so I can give this book to her in a giant cardboard box. Imaginative, empowering, and supportive, this guide to creating a robot out of a cardboard box and whatever you have on hand is an excellent gift for any youngster with a creative bent.
