Birthday of the World by Ursula Le Guin

If you are a fan of Le Guin's more widely-known works Left Hand of Darkness and the Dispossessed, do yourself a favor and check out this collection of stories set on those and other worlds within the same shared universe (collectively known as the Hainish Cycle).

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

This is a phenomenal book. I laughed, I cried, I loved these characters deeply. Green hits all the right notes in delivering the point of view of a teenager with terminal cancer. This isn't a book that exploits the protagonist's disability in order to make abled readers feel good about themselves. It's a phenomenally moving, important, human book. --Gretchen at Room

Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

I love pretty much everything Okorafor publishes, but I think she's really hitting her stride on young adult/middle reader stories with this, her third novel for the YA crowd. The protagonist and her close circle of friends come from numerious identities and their bond as initiates in a secret culture of magic users is believable and intriguing.

Hark! A Vagrant by Kate Beaton

Beaton's popular webcomic, Hark! A Vagrant, is now available in book form! She combines contemporary humor and pop culture with history and literature to great effect. For a taste of her absurd and intelligent mockery, enjoy the classic comic "The Case of the Two Watsons", one of the hundreds of strips collected in this volume:
