A sympathetic, sweet story about a girl who is famous in her fandom (think Harry Potter BNFs) going to her first year of college and navigating growing up, falling in love, and deciding how she wants to live her life. The characters are so real, I laughed and cried and couldn't put this down. I was afraid the book would come off as dismissive of fanfiction and fannish identity, but it doesn't (for those of you who were worried--I definitely was).  Tumblr fans will recognize the distinctive art of Noelle Stevenson (aka gingerhaze) gracing the cover.

Gretchen's Rec: Ruthlessly beautiful, disturbing, and haunting. This is my favorite series of all time--every time I re-read it I get something new out of it.

Revival by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton

A surprising, very human (and gruesome) story set in Wausau in a town
quarantined because the dead came back to life one day. GREAT ensemble
cast and strong writing that deals deftly with the reality of rural WI
life, racism, sexism and family issues. Unsettling horror meets small
town drama. Beautiful art and solid writing make this another favorite
from Image.

Saga Vol. 2 by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples

Saga is hands-down my favorite currently running comic. Vaughan's writing is sharp, Staples's art is evocative, and the story--of a young mixed family trying to escape a centuries-old intergalactic blood feud--will appeal to sci fi fans and parents alike.

The Killing Moon by N. K. Jemisin

Jemisin's worldbuilding is careful and fascinating, and the plot twists kept me turning the pages. The tension between morality and religion, between blind obedience and waiting to discover the truth, even when it is challenging, is central to this story. Great book, and now I'm raring for the sequel!

Welcome to Your Awesome Robot by Viviane Schwarz

I absolutely can't wait for my goddaughter to be a couple of years older so I can give this book to her in a giant cardboard box. Imaginative, empowering, and supportive, this guide to creating a robot out of a cardboard box and whatever you have on hand is an excellent gift for any youngster with a creative bent.

Sea Change by S. M. Wheeler

Reading this book is like reading a traditional heroine's quest fantasy turned 90 degrees. Nothing quite happened the way I have been led to expect by countless plucky heroine stories before it. This is the story you find when you turn the shiny river stone over and see the beauty in the ugly, mossy black wet underside.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler

On its surface, this is a story of a young woman reflecting on her unusual, now fractured, family. This is the work of a talented and skilled writer--often funny, frequently touching, always thoughtful. This one sticks with you.

The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson

This is one of those books that has it all. Great character, plot, pacing, wonderful worldbuilding, and oh yeah, did I mention it's set in a dystopic matriarchal future Brazil and explores questions of identity, body modification, art, politics, culture, and fame? Oh oh, and ALSO, most people are bisexual and it's not a big deal. This is everything I have been waiting for in a YA novel.

Captain Marvel vol. 1 by Kelly Sue Deconnick

I have never been a big reader of Marvel titles, but enough friends told me to give this one a shot and. Yes. It's bright and brilliant and heartfelt, and Deconnick's writing is just getting better and better.
