The Bone Palace by Amanda Downum

This was on the Tiptree Award Honor List last year, and it is the second book in a series, though I enjoyed it without having read the first novel. I really appreciated Downum's approach to her trans protagonist, Savedra, who was a fully realized character and whose plot arc affirmed her gender identity without ignoring her gender or casting her as nothing more than a victim. I really liked the way her relationships were handled, too. I'll be reading the other books in the series, even though the necromancy and blood magic was occasionally more gruesome than I typically prefer (consider this an enticement if you are into fantasy books about dark magic!) especially since the next one involved an intersex character introduced in this book.--Gretchen at Room
