Ash by Malinda Lo

I recently read Ash by Malinda Lo, a queer YA retelling of Cinderella. If you think that sounds like your kind of book, you will love this one. It is so gorgeously written! It reminded me of Deerskin by Robin McKinley in a lot of ways (though it isn't nearly so dark and difficult in theme), especially in terms of how Lo balances the language of fairy tales with the language of modern fiction, and the quality of the writing overall.

I particularly appreciated how unexpected the story was--even though I've seen and read dozens of tellings of this story, this one was different enough to be fresh, while still maintaining a rich interpretation of what's at the heart of the tale. I liked the protagonist a lot, she felt fully realized to me, so much that I kept forgetting that this was Cinderella and kept being surprised by all the familiar bits of that story when they'd turn up. It's a really great book, recommended for young adults and adults alike.
