Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor

I love pretty much everything Okorafor publishes, but I think she's really hitting her stride on young adult/middle reader stories with this, her third novel for the YA crowd. The protagonist and her close circle of friends come from numerious identities and their bond as initiates in a secret culture of magic users is believable and intriguing. The plot is gripping and the characters well-rounded and realistic, and the magic is fascinating and well-explored, and the Nigerian setting is modern and realistic. Highly recommended for readers of YA fantasy, and also check out Zahrah the Windseeker and The Shadow Speaker, set in related universes.
